Lesson Learned

After their bug breakfast, Graceson and Izzy helped round up all the girls. We put them back in their pen and let Enoch off the chain. Somehow we didn't get them all. Enoch found Goldie and chased her around and around and finally under the house. (He has been acting a tad bit too excited around the girls and I am not so sure if I will ever totally trust him when they are out of their pen.) After putting him back on the chain, the boys and I walked around the house and looked under it and all around it..... My house sits on blocks and there is a lot of room under there, but not a safe place for a chicken to be for too long. We prayed and asked God to help us find Goldie and to keep her safe. Then we all three laid on our bellies and called her. She is one of the buffs and I would so hate for her to get hurt or get into trouble and need help. It was such an awful feeling.. We just laid there for about 10 minutes looking up on the bottom side of the flooring of the house. Checking the beams and all the other hiding places, while still on our tummies. Then I noticed her really small tiny looking body close to the ground in the tall grass under the edge of the house, being as small and as quiet as she could be. I could only see about a quarter of her, about 6 feet to the right of where Graceson and Izzy and I had decided to lay down. Isn't God so kool? He heard our prayer, and HE cares about everything we care about. He loves us and wants HIS children to be blessed. He brought us to exactly the right spot where our poor little Goldie was doing a great job of being invisible. God uses these things in our lives to cause our faith to grow. It is such a thrill to see these little boys faces when they realize that God answered a prayer. HE heard us and HE helped us. Of course after this horrible ordeal the guys wanted to hold her and comfort Goldie and of course we had to bring her in the house and take her picture. I am so thankful for each and every one of these silly little chickens. I pray that God will keep them all safe from harm and cause them to live in harmony and be nice to each other now in the tight space and even in the future when they are in the lap of chicken luxury!

After all this excitement, tomorrow sounds like a great day to keep the girls at the home base for a day. I need to do a better job of making sure they are all accounted for. Also, Megan became HUGE and graduated to big girl coop tonight while everyone was "sleeping" and they need a chance to bond as a flock with the newbie, and be watched carefully.....so lots of great reasons to take a breather and stay close to the ol hen house for a spell.

  2. Did not work....... Poor little guy (or girl) was in the corner of the pen this morning ..... and when Megan saw me.... she tried to come to me... like I was her mama........ so sad... so I sat there and watched her and drank my coffee for about 5 minutes..... Juliet and James attacked her..... just to show her whose boss.... so i let that slide... ( they attack everyone )

When I saw Cinnamon go to Megan and peck peck peck..... and Megan peep peep peep and try to come to me... and finally she hid behind the water dish...... OMG that was it.....

All this after a night together.... I guess she is too small and they are too crowded.... not a good mix. I thought she was getting too big for the baby cage but I guess not.... Even if Megan is a Rooster I would like for Megan to stay alive till we find him a good home.. Peeps want Roosters according to BETH.

So.... back to plan A which feels right anyway..... Wisdom from the Almighty. Wait till new coop is complete and put both groups of chickens in there at the same time...... even young ones first .... so everyone is new! I will stick with this plan and if these babies outgrow their baby pen before that...... I will deal with it then... but for now.... no one is going to be thrown in with those mean ol hens who think they own the world.

  3. i'm glad goldie's o.k. one of my girls did exactly the same thing one night when they were accidentally left out after dark. she was so still and invisible that i almost stepped on her. i was looking right where she was and didn't see her multiple times. it's comforting that their instinct, placed there by our Father God, is to be so quiet when they know they're in danger. good girls.

  7. Girls you'll need to keep notes on what your chickens do, how they react to each. Then make up your own story for us all to read.

  8. Frances..... you have a lot to add. Your cowboy stories are icing on the cake..... YOU were raised with chickens and already the things you have shared with me have helped me so much... for instance ;;; no need to over clean the coop, chill out and enjoy your chickens, too much worry takes that fun out of them, and so much more. When was the last time you sent these Cowboy stories off to the publisher and how many publishers did you send them to?

  9. You have to go through an agent to get to a publisher.I sent to 4 or 5. The one liked them but it would cost me lots of $$$$ before they would send them out to publishers. If you are not well known it's hard to get a book published. Maybe I am just to write for my friends to read.
